Ground Animal Removal and Exclusion in MA & RI
About Our Animal Removal and Exclusion Services
Ground animals such as skunks, groundhogs, possums, foxes, snakes, and others can be very destructive, dangerous, and annoying. Other animals that seek shelter under ground structures but can also climb, including raccoons, rats, weasels, chipmunks, and squirrels. Ground structures such as low-to-the-ground decks, porches, sheds, additions, gazebos, ramps, pool houses, and others are the perfect place for any of the aforementioned animals to live, have babies, and create latrine areas. Once they make themselves comfortable in their new homes, they tend to become bolder as time goes on, eventually causing structural damage to these structures and gaining access to your home from underneath these structures. Additionally, have no problem eating and defecating in the same areas; thus, it becomes a health risk for humans to use these structures because you are breathing in what lives in their feces. Health issues including histoplasmosis, roundworm, hantavirus, and general respiratory issues are common risks associated with animal feces.

Why Ground Exclusion is Better Than Trapping
So what is the solution? Many wildlife management companies immediately suggest trapping. While Baystate Wildlife offers trapping services, it isn’t the ideal solution for several reasons.
- Any animal trapped on your property can only be released on your property. If it is removed from your property, it must be euthanized according to the law. We feel they do not need to die; they just cause us humans and our pets issues and health risks.
- Once animals have made a home under a structure, even if they are trapped and removed, other animals will be attracted to the vacant den. The area under the structure often becomes a revolving door for wildlife.
- The solution is to give the animals the ability to vacate but not be able to get back in. The process is called ground exclusion. Baystate Wildlife attaches a heavy-duty screen barrier to the bottom of the structure that goes into the ground deep enough so that the animals cannot get back in. It also includes an eviction door so that they may exit. Once they exit and cannot get back in, they will move on and go live somewhere else. Some wildlife management companies use a solid metal barrier. This is not a good idea, as it does not allow water to flow out from under the structure, thus eventually causing damage to the structure.
- Baystate will also clean the excrement from under the structure as best we can and spray-sanitize to neutralize the harmful bacteria and pathogens.
Chimney Cap Installation in MA & RI
All chimneys should be capped unless there is a safety reason they cannot be, such as certain gas inserts. Without a chimney cap, animals can enter and exit at will, and rain, snow, and debris can fall into the chimney, causing animal noise and feces, mold from constant moisture, and a fire hazard. Baystate Wildlife will install a stainless steel chimney cap on your chimney to prevent these issues. The caps we provide are high quality and are installed so that animals, wind, and other elements will not knock them off, and our chimney cap installations come with a 2-year warranty. Of course, if animals are in the chimney, we will remove them first. Raccoons, squirrels, bats, birds, and other animals love to call your chimney home.
