When you think about your home and where unwanted animals might be hiding, it’s easy to forget about your attic. However, the attic is a fairly easy and commonplace for animal, squirrels in particular to make their home. Squirrels like attics because there is most of the time an easy entry point – a vent or some small opening that they can fit through and start to borrow in your attic so that they can stay warm and away from predators.

Being a homeowner, it’s important to always keep ways in mind to protect your home from weather and animals. Most people notice squirrels in the attic because they cause noise that you can hear in your ceiling. Not only do squirrels cause noise, but they can cause damage.

What to do if a squirrel is in your attic

Squirrel removal can be a tricky thing to do, especially because they can fit almost anywhere. It is best left to a professional. If you do try and remove the squirrel yourself, the first thing you should do is to determine all of the entry/exit points squirrels have created.

Once you have found all of the points squirrels can enter your attic, you should cover with a steel mesh all of them but the main exit/entry point. You can try and entice and give all the squirrels out of the attic by playing loud music and keeping lights on. If this doesn’t work, then you can then mount a trap on that hole and try and trap them as they come in so they can’t enter anymore.

Once you have removed the squirrel, it’s important to ensure they don’t come back. This is where hiring a professional is very helpful because they know what to look for, and common places that squirrels can gain entry or could be hiding.

Preventing squirrels from getting into your attic

  • Keep trees and shrubs away from the roof line.
  • If you see any cracks in the foundation, fill them.
  • Check occasionally for entry points, squirrels are small so they can fit into even the smallest holes. They are also excellent chewers so if a squirrel wants to make a small hole larger, they can.
  • Don’t keep firewood against the side of your house, this is a great place for squirrels to find shelter.

If you have unwanted squirrels anywhere in your home, we are happy to help you get them out of your house and make sure they don’t come back. We humanely remove animals and squirrels to ensure they don’t cause any more damage to your home.
