We see squirrels almost everywhere and pretty much every season. But why are squirrels so common during the Springtime? With the warmer weather on the rise and the abundance of flowers and crops in bloom, squirrels are coming out of their hiding spots and into neighborhoods. Squirrels are not a fan of heavy heat and would rather prefer shade over the sun, so Springtime is usually their favorite season. Without proper squirrel removal, they can cause major damage to your home and property. Squirrels are known for being big chewers, and if they enter your home, they could chew on your wires or other items you may have laying around. This can cause extreme damage and even a risk of a fire. Take a look at more information on squirrels and Springtime gardens, and consider reaching out to a professional for squirrel and other animal removal before circumstances get worse!

Why do squirrels like gardens?

Squirrels are attracted to gardens because they love food, especially the freshly growing crops in your garden. When it comes to their food, squirrels are not picky eaters and will eat just about anything in sight! Whether your garden is full of crops like veggies or fruits, or even flowers, flower bulbs or some bird seed around your garden, it doesn’t make a difference to them. You name it, they’ll eat it! Looking to keep squirrels away from your home and garden this Spring? Here are some humane methods to keep your plants healthy and growing without squirrel invasion!

5 Humane Methods For Keeping Squirrels Out Of Your Garden

Mothballs

Buy some mothballs and place them in your garden next to the plants or on the soil. Mothballs act as a natural squirrel repellent because they dislike the scent very much. Continue to replace the mothballs as the scent fades or disappears, and so should the squirrels from your garden.

Apple Cider Vinegar

The universal product, apple cider vinegar can be helpful once again. Pour some into a spray bottle and spray away on your whole garden. The best part about it is that apple cider vinegar is safe for your plants and flowers without harming them. Squirrels hate the pungent smell of apple cider vinegar and will not want to be near a garden that has been sprayed with it. It is also a good idea to drench some cloth or towels in the vinegar and place them in your attic for further prevention or concerns of squirrels in your attic.

Decoy animals

Squirrels get scared of most other animals such as snakes, owls, and especially foxes. By getting a plastic or fake decoy of one of these animals will scare the squirrels away from coming near your growing plants and veggies. They specifically hate any noises or sounds that these animals would make so if it creates noise with the sense of motion, that would work even better!

Peppermint oil

The smell of peppermint oil is another scent that squirrels cannot stand the smell of. Peppermint oil is another harmless scent for your garden and it will also not harm the squirrel that comes into contact with it. Sprinkling this essential oil all over your garden will ensure that squirrels will stay clear for a while. This natural deterrent can be used directly on the plant, on the soil, or even rubbed on the stocks of the crops.

Motion sensor sprinklers

Sometimes the best way to keep squirrels from coming back is to scare them. By installing a motion sensor sprinkler that detects when they are trying to come up to the garden, it will make the skittish animals run away. They do not like to be startled or getting sprayed by water so they will soon pick up on the fact that approaching the garden, will mean getting sprayed by the sprinkler.
