A squirrel in Boston that looks dangerous

There is some wildlife that you can look at and automatically determine if they are dangerous or not. Squirrels can be deceiving because they look little and fluffy but can be dangerous if they are provoked and can cause a lot of damage to your home. Knowing the dangers of squirrels in your home and yard can help prepare you to take steps to protect your home and yourself against them.

Signs a Squirrel is in Your Home

  • Noises in the attic. If you hear noises, thumps, or scurrying noises in the attic during the day, chances are they’re not from mice or rats – they’re from a squirrel.
  • Bad smell in the attic. Squirrels leave urine and feces everywhere they go. If they’re in the attic then over time, it will start to smell. If a squirrel dies in the attic or in a wall, then that smell will not be able to be missed and chances are you will smell it as it starts to rot/decay.
  • Holes in the roofline. Squirrels tend to get into your home/attic by a tree branch or electric wire, and they can crawl on that to get to your roof. If you see holes in your roofline they could be from a squirrel creating an entry or exit point.
  • You find a nest. Squirrels nest are messy and loosely constructed from leaves, bark, vines, and twigs. If you find a pile of these, it’s probably a nest.

Why Should You Care?

If a squirrel gets into your home, they’re inviting their friends and other animals in as well. Although squirrels aren’t directly dangerous to humans there are problems that are directly associated with having squirrels in your home. Squirrels like most rodents are chewers and are notorious for chewing through walls and wires which can cause you costly damage to your home. Squirrels carry diseases and parasites which can be transmitted to you. Some of the most common things a squirrel can easily bring into your home are lice, mites, ticks or fleas.

If you have a squirrel problem and need the squirrels removed, contact the experts at Baystate Wildlife. We can humanely and safely remove squirrels from your home. For a free quote or more information, you can contact us online or call us at 781-830-6080.
