Signs You May Have Squirrels in Your Home
Scratching Sounds
Scratching sounds in your walls or attic while your house is quiet and you’re trying to sleep, is a major sign of a squirrel invasion. If you find yourself up at night feeling restless, there is a good chance you have some unwanted guests. Squirrels scurry around your attic and through your walls looking for a place to hide and care for their new babies. If you hear any scratching sounds this is your first warning of unwanted guests, and you shouldn’t wait for things to get worse before you call a wildlife removal specialist.
Urine or Squirrel Droppings
Another major sign of a squirrel invasion is the sight of squirrel urine or droppings in your home. These droppings are most commonly found inside your attic because that is where they are claiming their territory. Finding these droppings or urine around your home may be very gross and extremely contaminated with diseases. Do not pick these squirrel feces up without protection on your hands, and if you find some it’s best to leave for a wildlife removal specialist. Many small animal droppings look the same, so if you are unsure which animal is invading your home, leave the evidence for experienced wildlife professionals to assess.
Home Damage
If the above signs are not discovered before you can remove the squirrels from your home, damage to your personal belongings will soon follow. It is imperative that you get rid of the squirrels in a timely manner with wildlife removal professionals before you risk hazards to your home. Like many other wildlife, they can bring in illnesses and dirtiness to your home. They are not meant to be pets and can be extremely harmful no matter how cute and innocent they may seem. They can cause serious damage to your personal belongings and your cable and wiring throughout your home and attic. If you find physical home damage call a wildlife removal company ASAP!
Why Do Squirrels Like Attics and Walls?
Squirrels can be found outside your neighborhood year round looking for food, shelter, and family. If you have a squirrel invasion in your home, odds are they are hiding up in your attic or in between your walls when you may least suspect it. Squirrels especially love attics because they are an uninhabited space, located high up, in a dry and warm atmosphere. They feel safe and protected up there because they know their predators cannot get them up high under the roof of your attic, and they can ensure their family and babies stay safe. One of the main reasons they choose your home’s attic is because they are ready to have their babies. Once they birth these babies they will become very protective of them and use their urine as a way to mark your attic as their territory.
How Do I Prevent Squirrels From Getting Into My Attic?
In order to prevent squirrels from entering your attic and making it their home, it is a good idea to start trimming any trees that are near your attic that would make it easy for them to climb up and enter. Squirrels hate the feeling of aluminum foil in between their teeth as they chew, so it would also be a good idea to line the bottom of the tree trunk with aluminum foil so they cannot chew it or climb up it easily. Placing some aluminum foil around the attic as well is smart incase they do have a chance to enter, it prevents them from coming back and wanting to stay. They will not want to chew on your items if there is aluminum foil wrapped around them.
For preventing squirrels in your attic, it is also a good idea to change the bird feeder outside your home. Bird feeders can attract squirrels especially if it contains sunflower seeds, nuts, corn, etc. It is a safe idea to change out some of the food in the bird feeder to prevent squirrels from hanging around your yard and potentially entering in your attic. Along with that, squirrels hate certain smells such as coffee, spicy cayenne pepper, or peppermint so sprinkling some of that around the outside of your home or up in your attic is the perfect way to prevent squirrels from staying in your attic or entering. Mothballs are also a great thing to throw up in your attic to prevent squirrels from entering your attic or in your walls.
