A bat in the attic

If you have critters in your attic and you don’t know what they are – sometimes they could be bats. Bats just like most animals look for warm places to make their home, especially during the New England winters. Bat families prefer somewhere warm and dark to make their home and have their babies. An attic fits those qualifications very well.

But what do you do if you have bats in your attic? And how can you make sure bats don’t make their home in your attic? Most of the bat problems start when their babies start to crawl around and then fly. They’re just learning so they will be making a lot of noise and running into walls and things in the attic.

Step by step what to do if you have bats in your attic

You will want to remove the bats from your attic if you are sure that there are bats. Their droppings will not only smell bad, but can also cause structural damage to your home and can sometimes carry a fungus that can lead to respiratory problems.

  1. First you will want to see where they are coming in and out from. They will normally go out for food right at dusk, this is a great time to try and catch them to see. There also may be more than one entry/exit point.
  2. You’ll want to block off every point you have found except their main (and biggest) point. You should then try and install a one way door – letting any bats left inside the ability to leave but not get back in.
  3. Watch and see if you are still seeing bats leave for dinner every night. If you are still seeing them leave, there could be another entry point that you missed. They can get through even the smallest of holes.
  4. If you no longer see bats then you probably have solved your problem.

When to call help with removing a bat

If you are concerned about bats being in your attic and your safety or don’t want to go through the hassle of waiting to see where they are coming in and out from, it’s best to call a professional. Bat removal experts are trained on how to safely get bats out of your attic so you don’t have to worry about the problem anymore. There is no simple way for you to get bats out of your attic.
